Private one-on-one photography workshops, $50/hr
These hands-on workshops for digital SLR cameras are designed to take your love of photography to the next level! Each workshop is a minimum of one-hour in length but may be extended up to three hours at your request so that you may learn at a pace that is comfortable for you. Roundtrip travel time outside of Rio Vista will be charged at $50/hr in 1/4 hour increments.
I shoot with Nikon, but these workshops are applicable with any brand DSLR. Be sure to bring your camera manual with you!
Workshop Tracks
Track 1 - Beyond Auto/Program Mode (Take control of your camera!)
- Introduction to exposure (aperture, shutter speed, ISO)
- Shooting with Aperture Priority
- Shooting with Shutter Priority
- Exposure compensation
Prerequisites: None.
What to bring: Your DSLR camera and manual.
Track 2 - Metering (Take control of the exposure!)
- Metering types (matrix, center-weighted, spot)
- Using a gray card to set exposure
- Interpreting the histogram
- Bracketing exposures
- Introduction to Manual mode
Prerequisites: Workshop track 1, or a working knowledge of the topics covered there within.
What to bring: Your DSLR camera and manual. A gray card is recommended.
Track 3 - Focus (No more blurry pictures!)
- Hand-held techniques
- Focus modes (manual, single servo, continuous servo)
- Using focus points
- Focus tracking (higher end cameras)
- Focal length and shutter speed considerations
- Mirror lockup (higher end cameras)
- Timer / cable release
Prerequisites: Workshop tracks 1, or a working knowledge of the topics covered there within.
What to bring: Your DSLR camera and manual, a tripod, and a cable release or remote release.
Track 4 - Creative Control (Make your pictures look their best!)
- Camera picture modes
- White balance (presets, temperature, custom)
- sRGB / Adobe RGB color modes
- JPG vs. RAW (introduction)
Prerequisites: Workshop track 1, or a working knowledge of the topics covered there within.
What to bring: Your DSLR camera and manual. A gray card is recommended.
Track 5 - Shooting in Low Light (non-flash photography)
- ISO
- Using fast lenses
- Shutter speed considerations
- Metering
Prerequisites: Workshop tracks 1, 2, and 3, or a working knowledge of the topics covered there within.
What to bring: Your DSLR camera and manual, and a tripod.
Track 6 - Flash Photography: Level I
- Auto mode (iTTL)
- Balanced mode (fill flash)
- Flash exposure compensation
- Flash range
- Direct / indirect (bounced)
- Modifiers (diffusers)
Prerequisites: Workshop tracks 1 and 2, or a working knowledge of the topics covered there within.
What to bring: Your DSLR camera and manual, and a speedlight.
Track 7 - Flash Photography: Level II
- Front curtain, rear curtain, slow rear curtain
- Flash exposure lock
- Off camera flash
Prerequisites: Workshop tracks 1, 2, and 6, or a working knowledge of the topics covered there within.
What to bring: Your DSLR camera and manual, a speedlight with remote capability or an iTTL flash cord, and a light stand with shoe adapter for your flash.
Track 8 - Flash Photography: Level III
- Dragging the shutter
- Metering for ambient light
- Multiple speedlights
Prerequisites: Workshop tracks 1, 2, 6, and 7 or a working knowledge of the topics covered there within.
What to bring: Your DSLR camera and manual, two or more speedlights with remote capability or an iTTL flash cord(s), light stands with shoe adapters for your flashes, and a tripod.
